DLSS 5 Now Works on RTX 20 and 30 Series Graphics Cards

NVIDIA’s new DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology has been made to work on RTX 20 and 30 series graphics cards and emulators thanks to mod developers.

NVIDIA’s experimental DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology, which has not yet been officially released, has reached a much wider range of hardware than expected thanks to leaked documents. The PC modding community has managed to run this technology, initially thought to be designed only for the RTX 50 series, on RTX 20 and 30 series graphics cards, as well as older graphics APIs and even emulators.

This technology, leaked through NBA 2K27, was quickly integrated into older games lacking native DLSS support thanks to the efforts of mod developers, and optimized with more efficient FP16 computing systems, making it accessible to a wider user base.

Optimization Process for Older Hardware Speeding Up

In the early days of the leak, performance dropping to around 4 FPS even on powerful cards like the RTX 3080 showed that the technology’s original FP8 workload design was incompatible with older architectures.

However, the community quickly took action to rectify this. Led by names like @DystopianSuns, efforts enabled DLSS 5 to work in FP16 format. This change allowed Turing and Ampere architecture cards to utilize Tensor cores much more efficiently.

Mod Tools Greatly Simplified Installation

Management tools like RHI (ReShade HDR Installer) played a significant role in the spread of the technology. RHI version 2.4.9 added the modified “nvngx_dlssnr.dll” library developed by ShortFuse, transforming the system from a manual to an automated configuration.

This system, working with ReShade and RenoDX plugins, allows for the observation of Neural Rendering effects even in modern games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Innovative Solutions Developed for Games Without Native Support

Modders are targeting not only new maps but also classics that lack DLSS support. The DLSS5-Feeder project uses motion vectors and depth information from games to provide the information needed for DLSS 5.

This allows for the experience of Neural Rendering quality in games such as Batman: Arkham Knight, Metro 2033 Redux, and DOOM (2016). Furthermore, tests conducted on Manhunt via PCSX2 reveal just how far the boundaries of the modding world have expanded.

The Limits and Future of the System are Being Discussed

Of course, it’s important to remember that these studies do not carry official NVIDIA support. Issues such as motion vector rendering flaws, HUD element distortions, and variable performance results still exist. Nevertheless, the fact that the community has created such a comprehensive compatibility list before the official release of DLSS 5 is quite exciting for the future of AI-based image scaling technologies.
