It is claimed that the Disney+ platform works on a completely free subscription layer with advertising support. Here are the details.
The lines between digital broadcast platforms and classical television broadcasting are becoming increasingly blurred. The Disney+ platform is reportedly working on a new subscription layer that is completely supported by ads and where users can watch content without paying any price.
This development is based on information shared by Business Insider. It is stated that Disney+ product and technology chief Adam Smith talked about the possibility of this free layer in a meeting held within the company on Thursday, July 9.
Free publishing competition
It should be noted that for now this plan is only a possibility. Adam Smith did not share any details about when the free layer in question will be available or how much of the library will be available for free access.
It is thought that the reason behind Disney’s consideration of this move is the constant growth in YouTube’s audience. Although there is a YouTube Premium option, the fact that all content on the platform can be accessed free of charge with ads creates a reference point for Disney +.
According to Nielsen data, the three largest free streaming platforms in the USA account for 18.7 percent of the total viewing time as of April 2026. This rate was 16.8 percent the previous year and 12.7 percent the year before that. The rise of free advertising-supported broadcasting services such as Pluto TV and Tubi has attracted the attention of the Disney + administration.
User reactions
These arguments brought about different comments on social media platforms. Many users criticize the situation, stating that broadcast platforms have turned into the classical television model over time.
Some users argue that the free tier will negatively affect the viewing experience, reminding that even the cheapest subscription package available contains heavy advertising.
On the other hand, concerns are also expressed that a service offered free of charge may become priced in the future.
How do you think Disney+’s offering of a free advertising-based model will affect the user experience of the platform?
