Date Given for Path of Exile 2 1.0 – Coming Free and in English

Path of Exile 2 is completely renewing the Atlas system and end-game mechanics with the Return of the Ancients update.

Path of Exile 2, one of the most powerful representatives of the action role-playing games (ARPG) world, is preparing to enter its most critical corner in the Early Access process. Developer Grinding Gear Games announced the new massive update called “Return of the Ancients” (0.5.0). This patch, which will be available to players on May 29, 2026, not only introduces a new league, but also completely renews the “endgame” system, which has been the most criticized point of the game so far.

This update, which fully restructures the Atlas system, adds new upgrade classes and offers more than 50 hours of additional content, is the last major content pack on the way to the full version of the game (1.0).

  • The Return of the Ancients update is being released simultaneously for PC and consoles on May 29, 2026.

  • The end-game Atlas system is being completely revamped; Randomness gives way to a more strategic and zoned structure.

  • With the update, the “Runes of Aldur” league starts and allows players to customize their own items with runes.

Atlas Reshapes: Chaos Gives Way to Strategy

The uncertain Atlas progression, which was one of the most difficult issues for players in the early stages of Path of Exile 2, becomes history with this update. With “Return of the Ancients”, Atlas now turns into a more distinct and explorable map shaped around a central “Fortress”. Instead of wandering aimlessly across maps, players can now choose their own progression path by focusing on specific areas.

In this new structure, a new system called “Atlas Masters” comes into play. This system offers specific specializations that you can choose for your Atlas tree, similar to characters’ upgrade classes (Ascendancy). For example, by choosing a specific master you can change the characteristics of rare monsters on maps or customize the loot pool according to your own strategy. The Atlas passive tree, which includes more than 300 new nodes, provides players with unlimited customization opportunities.

Runes of Aldur League and New Mechanics

The “Runes of Aldur” league, which is at the heart of the new update, introduces the Ezomyte Rune Crafting mechanic into the game. Players strengthen their items by placing runes on ancient stone ruins they find on the maps.

However, this system has a price; Each rune you use also strengthens the enemies you encounter with the elemental properties of that rune. This risk-reward balance adds new depth to the game’s combat mechanics.

In addition, with this update, new upgrade classes “Martial Artist” and “Spiritwalker” for the Monk and Huntress classes are added to the game. While the Martial Artist class allows Monk characters to turn their gloves directly into weapons, the Spiritwalker gives the Huntress class the ability to fight spiritual beings.

Old Mechanics Go Modern: Breach, Delirium, and Ritual

Grinding Gear Games not only adds new content, but also overhauls the existing mechanics of the game. Popular events like Breach, Delirium, and Ritual now get their own special quest lines and massive boss fights.

While a new bar has been added that shows the difficulty level as the depths of the Delirium fog subside, the Breach mechanics are also enriched with a new item production system called “Genesis Tree”.

On the technical side, “In-game Build Guide” support attracts attention. Now players can import ready-made character configurations (builds) directly into the game without the need for any third-party software. This system visually shows in-game which points in the skill tree should be given points and which items should be selected.

Path of Exile 2 1.0 Last Big Stop Before Full Release

Return of the Ancients is seen as the last stop before version 1.0, which is planned to be released at the end of 2026. With this update, the developers aim to fix the basic skeleton of the game and make the final touches according to player feedback. With a total of 15 new boss battles, more than 40 new unique items and a completely renewed story flow, Path of Exile 2 is counting the days to take its place at the top of the ARPG genre.
