Critical BIOS Update for Steam Machine from Valve

Critical BIOS Update for Steam Machine from Valve

New BIOS update for Steam Machine is coming from Valve. Incorrectly lit red LED heating warning and hardware details are in our news.

The new Steam Machine, developed by Valve for living rooms and recently released with a starting price of $ 1,049, continues to make a big impact in the gaming world.

However, first users who purchase this compact gaming monster experience a short-term panic with the red LED light warning they encounter during graphics-intensive games. An official and very reassuring statement comes from Valve regarding this overheating problem, which is rapidly spreading on Reddit and various hardware forums.

The company admits that the device actually gives an unfounded danger warning at temperatures much lower than it should be, and with a new BIOS update to be released, it completely eliminates this problem by increasing the CPU and GPU warning limit directly to 100 degrees.

What is Steam Machine’s Red Light Problem?

Hardware enthusiasts especially closely monitor temperature values when they buy a new and valuable device. Powered by a 6-core special AMD Zen 4 processor architecture, RDNA 3 graphics unit and 16 GB DDR5 memory, the compactly designed Steam Machine also gets its share of these controls. .

During a user’s intense gaming test, when the processor temperature was 81 degrees and the graphics processor was only 75 degrees, the LED bar on the front panel of the device suddenly turned completely red.

At first glance, this scenario suggests that the device is approaching thermal limits or has significantly overheated.

However, as those familiar with PC hardware will know, in such a small form factor structure, these temperatures are quite cool and represent ideal operating ranges.

The main source of the error is that the temperature thresholds on the BIOS are configured incorrectly. Although there is no hardware danger, the system distracts the player by turning the lights red and psychologically interrupts the game enjoyment.

Official Statement from Steam Support Team

After this panic-inducing situation spread on social media, device owners contact Valve directly. The official response of the Steam Support unit to the issue summarizes the situation clearly.

After in-depth testing with engineers, it is officially recognized that there is an annoying issue in the current BIOS version that causes the red LED lights to trigger much earlier than set.

In the statement, it is stated that the device works normally up to 100 degrees, and when it reaches 100 degrees, it will reduce the clock speeds (thermal throttling) to protect itself.

It is reminding that if the temperature continues to rise above this level, the system will safely shut down itself immediately to prevent hardware damage.

The wrong thresholds, which are set as 95 degrees (CPU) and 90 degrees (GPU) in the current system, are reprogrammed as 100 degrees with the new BIOS update that will come soon.

Is 100 Degrees Safe for the System?

For many classic desktop computer users, 100 degrees seems quite scary and a level that should be avoided.

However, the new generation Steam Machine has at its heart a specially produced AMD processor with 30W power consumption, designed for laptops.

Mobile processor chips have higher heat tolerance due to their structure and are designed to work safely in the 95-105 degree band.

For this reason, the new update on the way does not prepare the ground for the device to overheat, it only prevents the system from giving red alarms unnecessarily.

Steam Machine, which took its place on the technology shelves at the end of June and brought a new breath to living room gaming, aims to offer players a much more trouble-free, stable and red alert-free gaming experience when the BIOS update in question is released.
