Apple has launched a new project, at Microsoft’s request under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), to enable copy-paste functionality between iPhones and Windows computers. This development, which was reviewed in March and presented as a project plan at the end of June, aims for seamless data transfer between iOS devices and Windows operating system computers. Microsoft’s application through the European Union’s interoperability request system will allow users to directly paste text or content copied on their iPhones onto their Windows devices. Thanks to this feature, users will be able to manage their productivity processes much faster without dealing with manual processes.

A New Permission Mechanism is Being Developed for Functionality

The technical solution offered by Apple involves the secure transfer of clipboard items on the iPhone to paired accessories or Windows computers. The company plans to use a method similar to the accessory notifications it offers for third-party wearable technologies with iOS 26.5. Users will need to give one-time permission for Windows computers to access iPhone information.

The system will operate with a different permission mechanism for each paired device to maintain user privacy.

Due to current restrictions, an app must be active in the foreground and the user must approve each copy process in order for it to read the iPhone clipboard. Apple’s “Universal Clipboard” feature, offered across its own devices, already provides this experience between macOS and iOS. Microsoft argues that this change is a fundamental necessity, stating that current restrictions prevent synchronization from always occurring in the background.

Global Release Not Expected

Apple stated that developing this feature requires significant engineering effort and that the work is planned to be completed in the fall of 2027. While the software is expected to be tested first in developer beta versions, general release may not occur until early 2028. The feature is currently expected to be limited to users within the European Union.

While Apple rolls out some features developed under DMA compatibility globally, it prefers to finalize others only within the European Union.

Although some features such as eSIM transfers have been offered globally in the past, functions such as notification forwarding and custom syncing have remained regional. Whether this new collaboration between iPhone and Windows will become a global standard is eagerly awaited by the technology world.
