Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow were ported to the PC platform with 3D voxel visuals by the Gen1Recomp project. Here is the new version of the classic game.
Although Nintendo had no plans to bring its classic games to the PC platform, the Gen1Recomp project, created by developer bryanthaboi, changed that. This project, which makes it possible to run Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow games locally on PC, brings a contemporary touch to the classic titles.
The project uses the LÖVE2D engine to recreate the games’ map and engine behavior in Lua. This system, which works by allowing users to include their own ROM files, successfully brings the games to the PC environment.
Modern Features and 3D Voxel Visuals
The Gen1Recomp project offers many new features that enrich the classic Pokémon experience. Players can change the game face as they wish, use the Game Boy Color color palette, and save and load at any point.
The most striking feature is the 3D voxel mode, which can be activated with the 3 keys on the keyboard. This mode gives the game’s classic 2D world a deeper structure, creating an atmosphere comparable to Square Enix’s renowned HD-2D visual style.
A New Perspective on the Classic Experience
Gameplay footage shared by Video Game Esoterica and Retro Dando showcases how voxel visualization changes the game’s atmosphere. These visual enhancements offer a more immersive experience on modern screens without compromising the game’s brand-new structure.
While official remakes have been released before, such as FireRed, LeafGreen, or the Let’s Go series, this work differs by being based on brand-new games. Gen1Recomp offers a highly advanced alternative for those who want to play classic Pokémon games while remaining faithful to their original versions.
Do you think modernizing classic games with fan projects like this is enough to extend the lifespan of the games?
