BMW Launches New Generation Figure 03 Robots at Spartanburg Factory

BMW Launches New Generation Figure 03 Robots at Spartanburg Factory

BMW started using Figure 03 humanoid robots at its Spartanburg factory. New generation robots increase efficiency in logistics operations.

Automotive giant BMW expanded its collaboration with Figure AI by taking the use of humanoid robots to the next level in its production facilities in Spartanburg, USA. Following the successful testing process it previously carried out with Figure 02 models, the company has now started using the new generation Figure 03 humanoid robots in the factory.

This strategic breakthrough, which aims to increase efficiency in BMW’s production lines, especially focuses on the automation of logistics processes. Robots, which supported welding operations in the body shop in the past, are now accelerating production processes by undertaking complex logistics missions.

  • BMW has included Figure 03 humanoid robots in its production line within the scope of its collaboration with Figure AI.
  • Figure 02 models took part in the production of more than 30 thousand X3 models during the 11-month pilot program.
  • The new generation Figure 03 robots optimize logistics processes with advanced tactile sensors and voice connection capabilities.
  • The company aims to increase workforce efficiency by transferring tasks that are repetitive and cause physical fatigue to robots.

Humanoid Robots Improve Their Technological Equipment

Figure 03 is equipped with much more advanced technical features compared to the previous generation Figure 02. The hands with sensitive tactile sensors in the new generation robots enable the modules to be grasped more safely and realistically. In addition, the integrated cameras and wireless charging technology in the palm significantly increase the operational continuity of the robot.

Offering a more compatible working environment with human employees thanks to its voice communication capability, Figure 03 can quickly adapt to complex systems in the factory.

BMW prioritizes employee health by delegating dangerous or monotonous tasks to robotic systems.

Logistics Processes Are Being Reshaped

Figure 02 robots played a critical role in the production of more than 30 thousand X3 vehicles by working in the body shop within the scope of the 11-month pilot program. However, the focus of Figure 03 was determined to be logistics operations rather than production.

These robots sort the car modules, which come to the factory mixed in large containers, and systematically place the modules on the relevant transport vehicles. This process was previously done by human power, but was quite time-consuming and repetitive.

Having robotic systems take over such monotonous tasks allows BMW’s production facilities to focus on more complex and creative missions. Company officials emphasize that employee satisfaction will increase by using humanoid robots in areas with physical difficulties.

Production Technologies Shape the Future

The use of humanoid robots in the automotive industry means not only gaining speed but also maximizing production precision. With this technological transformation, BMW is one step closer to its goal of transforming its factories into smart production centers.

The field efficiency of Figure 03 robots will be one of the main factors that will determine whether similar applications will be made in other facilities in the coming period.
