Having parted ways with some of the names from the Phil Spencer era, Sharma continues to form his own leadership group. This new restructuring aims to strengthen Xbox’s position, especially in the console market.
Strategic Leadership and New Names
Matthew Ball, CEO of Epyllion and known for his annual State of Gaming report, has been appointed as Xbox’s new chief strategy officer. Ball’s primary mission will be to get the Xbox console business, which has suffered a recent loss of market share, back on track.
Scott Van Vliet, who came from the OpenAI team within Microsoft, assumed the role of chief technology officer. Van Vliet, who has previously been involved in the Fire TV port of Minecraft and various portable game projects, will focus on increasing efficiency in product development processes.
Another important change in management took place with Chris Schnakenberg. As deputy corporate leader, Schnakenberg will manage ties with third-party publishers and developers.
A New Vision for the Future

The changes that Sharma has made since taking office have reached a quite remarkable level. The termination of the “This is an Xbox” campaign, the reductions in Game Pass Ultimate prices and the cancellation of the Gaming Copilot project show that the company has entered a new period.
Xbox plans to increase transparency by giving more value to players’ feedback. Steps such as changing the name and logo of the department are considered as a module of the efforts to reposition the brand.
