Battery Giant Varta Files for Bankruptcy

Battery Giant Varta Files for Bankruptcy

140-year-old German battery giant Varta filed for bankruptcy. Breaking up and selling the assets of the company, which has attracted the support of Porsche and investors, is on the agenda.

German cell and battery manufacturer Varta, one of the leading names in the European industry, filed for bankruptcy due to financial impasse. This process, which became official with four other applications to the Stuttgart District Court, left the future of an approximately 140-year-old industrial giant in uncertainty. While the search for new funds to overcome the cash flow difficulties experienced by the company was unsuccessful, the process became inevitable when existing shareholders Porsche and Michael Tojner refused to invest further. This shocking bankruptcy experienced by Varta reveals the heavy pressure of competition in the global battery market and changing power technologies on the company.

  • The Stuttgart Regional Court examined four different official applications for the bankruptcy of the company.
  • Porsche and investor Michael Tojner announced that they would not transfer any more capital to the company’s wasteful structure.
  • Varta is planned to be divided into parts and sold under the control of Deutsche Bank and various funds.
  • The company’s micro battery sales showed a significant decrease of approximately 47 percent by 2022.

The Company Enters a Difficult Transformation Process

The economic bottleneck that Varta has fallen into is not just a financial deficiency, but is also closely related to the change in market dynamics. The company, which has been operating in a wide range of areas from home electronics to space technologies for many years, has recently experienced great difficulties in resisting the competitive price policies of Asian manufacturers.

The 47% loss of revenue seen in the micro battery segment, especially in 2022, was the most concrete indicator that the company’s classical product range has lost its power in the market.

This is the first time in its 140-year history that a well-established industrial enterprise has faced such a great risk of liquidation.

Assets Are Being Dismantled and Offered for Sale

Following the developments, experts state that it is no longer possible for Varta to defend its integrity. The residential battery unit, which is considered one of the most valuable parts of the company, is expected to be taken over by Deutsche Bank and some hedge funds.

It is among the information received that investor Michael Tojner is interested in the production of micro batteries used in hearing aids. This segmented sales strategy is considered as the last move to save the surviving parts of the company.

Varta, which was previously withdrawn from the stock market in 2024 with the support package provided by Porsche and Tojner, unfortunately could not be saved with this step. Uncertainties regarding the company’s power storage systems and other sub-branches continue.

Industry representatives warn that this bankruptcy could create a huge gap in the European battery production ecosystem.

Stability in the global power storage market is taking shape again with the collapse of Varta.
