Swedish-based video game developer Paradox Interactive faced strong criticism from Turkish players due to the alternate history scenario and leader models included in its new strategy project. The visual design and certain descriptions of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, sparked a widespread debate on social media and gaming platforms.

Behind the Scenes: What are the Details in the Game?

Paradox Interactive, the company behind major series like Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, and Hearts of Iron, which have reached millions of players worldwide, is known for its historical simulations. However, the background story about Turkey in the company’s latest content has become the target of criticism due to its distance from historical reality and the visual presentation of Atatürk.

Players argue that the portrait of the leader was deliberately prepared in a careless or distorted form, while the terminology used in the in-game text regarding the independence struggle and reforms of the era reflects an incomplete and biased perspective. Steam reviews and Paradox’s official forums were quickly filled with organized reactions from Turkish players.

Boycott Call and Review Bombardment from the Community

Following these developments, Turkish player communities organized a review bombing protest against the company’s games through the platform. With the issue quickly being brought to global forums, the following demands are emerging:

  • Re-modeling of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s visual design in a form that is consistent with historical reality.
  • Correction of in-game biography and texts about Turkey through an impartial editorial process.
  • Publishing an official statement and apology from the development team.

Awaiting Response from Paradox

Paradox Interactive, one of the leaders in the historical strategy genre, has received previously similar feedback regarding sensitivities in different countries and has revised its content with some updates. However, considering the strong player base in the Turkish market, the way the crisis is managed plays a critical role in the company’s prestige in the region.

So far, no direct statement has been received from the development team. Whether these designs will be withdrawn in the final version of the game or fixed with a comprehensive patch will become clear following the community’s ongoing reactions.
