Apple’s four-sided curved display project may be postponed until 2028 due to image distortion at the corners and production difficulties.
According to information from South Korean technology sources, work carried out with display giants such as Samsung and LG may not be completed on the expected date due to image distortion in the screen corners and durability problems. This situation causes Apple to postpone the radical design change by at least one more year and shift it to 2028.
Image Distortion Problem:The curved structure of the screen at four corners causes light refraction and loss of brightness in the existing magnesium-silver alloy layers.
Material Change Obligation:Apple wants to switch to the more transparent Indium-Zinc Oxide (IZO) technology to solve the problem, but mass production capacity is not yet sufficient.
Billion Investment Requirement:LG Display needs to invest in a new production facility worth approximately $741 million for this new panel structure, which is one of the biggest factors slowing down the process.
Technical Obstacle on iPhone 20 Screen: IZO Technology and Mass Production Crisis
The “four-sided curved” screen design that Apple is working on aims to make the front of the phone look like a complete piece of glass. However, the magnesium-silver (MgAg) cathodes used in current OLED panels prevent the light from being distributed homogeneously in the curved corners of the screen. This causes ghosting and chromatic aberration at the edges of the screen. To overcome this problem, the company plans to switch to a more conductive and transparent material called IZO (Indium-Zinc Oxide).
However, the production of IZO cathodes cannot be done on existing OLED lines. This technology requires special equipment such as “low damage TCO spraying” equipment. It is stated that LG Display is preparing to invest 1.1 trillion won (approximately $741 million) to adapt to this new technology. On the Samsung side, it is stated that tests are continuing within the scope of special agreements made with Apple, but the mass production efficiency (yield rate) is still not at the desired level.
iPhone 20 Plans May Change: Delay Until 2028
This revolutionary screen, which is expected to be introduced with the “iPhone 20” (iPhone XX) model, which will be released in 2027, is likely to be delayed to the models in 2028 due to the disruptions experienced. Apple does not want to compromise on image quality due to its perfectionist approach. Sources state that Apple may use an intermediate formula with improved curved structures in the 2027 model, but it will be able to offer the “perfect four-sided curve” experience, which is its main goal, only in 2028.
This delay is not limited to just the curved screen. The curved structure on four sides also directly affects the internal hardware architecture, such as antenna placement, speaker outputs and hiding the Face ID sensors under the screen. Apple engineers have to ensure that the screen not only offers a visual feast, but also is resistant to drops.
Competition and User Experience
Although manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Huawei in the Android world have experimented with four-sided curved screens in the past, the “micro-curve” structure that Apple aims for promises a much smoother and higher touch sensitivity experience.
Apple, which also works on a special software layer to prevent wrong touches, aims to produce the most ergonomic and aesthetic phone on the market when it offers this technology. However, according to the current situation, technology enthusiasts will have to be a little more patient for this completely frameless iPhone dream.
