Google has officially implemented new security measures against sideloading in four pilot countries as part of its strategy to defend the Android ecosystem. Users of devices with Android 7 and above in Brazil, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia will now face stricter procedures for installing unverified applications.

The company states that it has taken this step to prevent scammers from forcing users to install malicious software. With the new regulation in question, users are now required to enable developer options, authenticate, and complete a 24-hour waiting period before they can sideload.

A mandatory 24-hour waiting period has been introduced for sideloading processes in Brazil, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia.

  • Users need to restart their devices and authenticate before they can install applications from external sources.

  • The new regulation target installations from sources other than authorized. stores such as Google Play and Samsung Galaxy Store.

New Security Procedures Change User Experience

This new process implemented by Google aims to make it more difficult for scammers to quickly access user devices. A user attempting to perform an external installation now has to overcome the additional security layers offered by the system. This right, activated through developer options, can be defined for seven days or indefinitely, depending on the user’s preference. However, this process becomes quite cumbersome for the average user as it requires restarting the phone.

The List of Authorized App Stores is Expanding

Currently, the officially recognized app stores include Google Play, Samsung Galaxy Store, Honor App Market, Oppo App Market, Xiaomi GetApps, vivo V-Appstore, and Transsion Palm Store.

While downloads from these stores are not subject to the new restrictions, installations made directly through internet browsers or third-party APK sites are subject to fees. With this move, Google aims to increase control over the app ecosystem.

Users Express Concerns About a Closed Ecosystem

Mixed reactions continue to emerge within the Android community regarding this move. While some support the security measures, a significant number of users argue that this is unusual for Android’s libertarian spirit. Users are concerned that these restrictions will eventually turn Android into a closed ecosystem like iOS. Although Google has only selected these four countries as pilot regions for now, it is expected that these security protocols will be extended to all global markets in the future.

Do you think this 24-hour waiting period that Android has imposed on sideloading processes is sufficient for security, or does it pose a threat to Android’s open nature? Don’t forget to share your thoughts on this matter with us below.
