Google made an important policy change in the Android backup system and updated the way Google Account storage is used. With this change, all backup information is now included in the 15 GB free or paid storage limit offered by users with a Google One subscription.

Previously, in Android backups, only images and images uploaded via Google Photos and MMS content were deducted from the storage space. With the new regulation, data such as SMS texts, call history and device settings began to be included in this limit.

New backup policy and user controls

Google states that this update will increase users’ backup size by around 40 MB on average. The company also offers new control options so that users can more transparently manage which data will be backed up.

With the new system, other separate on-off switches are added for SMS, MMS, call history and device settings. Users will be able to manage these preferences through the backup settings on their devices in the coming weeks.

Pixel device owners can access these new options by going to the Settings menu, Accounts and backup, then Google Backup and Other device data. You can also quickly access the relevant page by typing backup in the search bar in the Settings application.

Google started sending informational emails to existing users informing them that this change will come into effect within 45 days. The emails sent include details such as users’ current storage status and the estimated increase in Android backups.

The new policy was implemented as of July 7 for new Android backup users. For existing accounts, the transition process will be completed in the coming months.

Transparency and ease of administration for users

Google states that with this update, it offers users more transparency in backup processes. Per-appIn other words, thanks to application-based backup controls, the user is given full authority over which application’s data will be backed up.

The company spokesperson emphasizes that Android backup makes it easier to switch to a new device or recover data by storing phone data on the Google Account. This new policy aims to collect and manage all backup data under a single roof.
