AMD has begun taking its first steps towards the RDNA 5 graphics architecture in the Linux ecosystem. The company has entered the basic preparation process for Display Core Next 6 (DCN6), which will support the next-generation graphics units.
New AMDGPU patches sent to the Linux kernel mailing list form the infrastructure of the DCN6 image engine. This development is critically important for the software support of future RDNA 5-based graphics cards.
GFX13 Architecture and DCN6 Integration
The patches sent directly associate the DCN6 image engine with the GFX13 graphics architecture. As previously mentioned, the GFX13 codename represents AMD’s next-generation RDNA 5 architecture.
Display Core Next (DCN6) acts as a core unit in AMD graphics cards, managing display output and monitor interactions. Updated with each new GPU generation, version 6 of this engine confirms that the RDNA 5 hardware is in the development phase.
Currently, the shared code only provides a basic framework. AMD plans to include hardware-specific optimizations and other functions in future updates.
