Glasses-Free 3D Era: Samsung’s New Screen Technology

Glasses-Free 3D Era: Samsung’s New Screen Technology

In collaboration with POSTECH, Samsung has developed a new display technology that can switch between 2D and 3D and does not require glasses.

In collaboration with POSTECH, Samsung has developed a new display technology that can switch between 2D and 3D modes. This innovative system allows users to view high-resolution three-dimensional images without wearing any glasses.

The developed technology is based on the structure known as light field display and uses a metasurface lens layer consisting of nanometer-scale structures. This design aims to eliminate problems such as bulky lenses and narrow viewing angles encountered in traditional 3D displays.

3D Era with Metasurface Technology

The system developed by Samsung imitates the light reflection from real objects by transmitting light in multiple directions at the same time. This method misleads the brain and creates 3D depth perception without glasses.

One of the most remarkable features of the system is its ability to change focus characteristics and switch between 2D and 3D with a simple voltage change. Although the current prototype is 1.2 mm thick, it can offer a wide viewing angle of up to 100 degrees.

Unlike traditional light field displays, this new design does not require any eye tracking and eliminates the need for the viewer to remain fixed at a particular point. In this way, more than one person can experience the 3D effect at the same time.

Commercial Use and Future Prospects

It should be noted that the technology is not yet ready for home televisions. The current lens prototype developed by Samsung is 25 square centimeters in size and covers an area of about a quarter of a smartphone screen.

Experts predict that this technology will be used in smartphones, tablets and commercial displays at the first stage. Business displays, especially in the retail sector, may be among the first application areas of this new 3D technology.

By integrating this technology into mobile devices in the future, it may be possible for phones to display photos in 3D using depth maps. In addition, in the gaming world, the door is opened for new generation handheld console projects with glasses-free 3D support.

This work by Samsung brings the future potential of 3D display technologies to the agenda again.

How do you think this technology would change the user experience if it became standard on smartphones or game consoles?
