Samsung Faces the Risk of a $20 Billion Strike

Samsung Faces the Risk of a $20 Billion Strike

While the 20 billion dollar strike crisis at Samsung caused major disruptions in production, it also mobilized the South Korean government.

Samsung Electronics is on the verge of a serious crisis due to a strike wave involving approximately 40 thousand unionized employees. Employees, who demanded a 15 percent performance bonus based on the company’s recent high profits, decided to expand their work stoppage after the management rejected this request.

Night shift actions at semiconductor facilities in Pyeongtaek resulted in declines in chip production of 58 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

The threat of a full-scale strike, planned to cover May and June, is followed with concern by experts on the grounds that it could cost the company $20 billion.

  • Unionized employees within Samsung demand a 15 percent performance bonus due to high profits.
  • Work stoppages during the night shift have led to serious decreases in production capacity.
  • Experts predict that the upcoming full-scale strike could cause a loss of $20 billion for Samsung.
  • South Korea’s Ministry of Industry warns that the loss of competition in the semiconductor industry may be impossible to compensate for.

Ministry Concerned About Risks in the Semiconductor Industry

South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan evaluated the situation of Samsung Electronics as a national issue. Minister Kim emphasized that the achievements belong not only to the management or employees, but also to the country’s more than 4 million small investors and the national pension fund.

Drawing attention to the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry, the Minister stated that in case of loss of competition, it is generally not possible to compensate for this loss.

Global competition in the semiconductor market is in such a delicate balance that it cannot tolerate even the slightest production disruption.

Parties Should Show a Mature Approach to Solution

The Ministry stated that they did not intend to intervene in the negotiations between the parties, but that a mature decision should be taken, taking into account the interests of both current and future generations.

The deadlock in talks between company management and union representatives has the potential to directly impact the global technology supply chain. If a compromise is not reached, Samsung’s dominance in the global market could be seriously shaken.

This ongoing strike process risks deeply affecting Samsung’s unshakable image in the technology world.

We are curious about your views on this workforce crisis experienced by Samsung and the possible $20 billion loss; Do you think the company management should accept the bonus demand of the employees, or should a different path be followed for production continuity?
