2nm Chips are on the Way: TSMC’s New Production Target Has Been Announced

TSMC achieved a significant milestone in the 2nm production process, reaching a monthly capacity of 20 thousand wafers in its Fab 20 facility. Here are the details of the new chip technology.

TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor foundry, has reached an important milestone in the transition from 3nm production process to 2nm technology. One of the company’s production facilities has reached a monthly capacity of 20 thousand wafers in preparation for the shipment of new generation chips.

Five different facilities in Taiwan are entirely focused on 2nm production. Fab 20, among these facilities, is rapidly increasing its capacity to meet the increasing demand.

Apple and Google will be pioneers in the transition to 2nm technology

Although chips produced with 2nm technology have not yet been released, this advanced process accounted for 3 percent of the company’s revenues in the third quarter of 2026. TSMC emphasizes the strength of demand by stating that design approvals on the 2nm process are four times higher than on the 3nm node.

Google and Apple are preparing to introduce the first system-on-system chips (SoC) using 2nm technology starting next month. The Pixel 11 series, which is expected to be introduced in August, is expected to come with the Tensor G6 processor, and the iPhone 18 series, which will be released in September, is expected to come with the A20 Pro chip.

TSMC’s 3nm technology continues to maintain its volume leadership with a monthly production of 175 thousand wafers. However, over time, as artificial intelligence-focused customers transition to the new 2nm process, this technology is expected to become one of the company’s main sources of income.

AI segment dominates 2nm demand

AMD officially announced that the MI455X GPU model designed for Agentic AI will use TSMC’s 2nm process. In the coming period, NVIDIA’s Rubin architecture will also join the competition in this field.

It is claimed that artificial intelligence chips will constitute a large part of the 2nm production volume in the future. TSMC aims to reinforce its technological leadership in the field with this new lithography technology.

Do you think 2nm technology will be able to provide the expected big leap in smartphone and artificial intelligence performance?
