WhatsApp has started rolling out a new AI content label feature on the Android platform, aiming to enable content creators and channel administrators to transparently share media generated by artificial intelligence. Tested with WhatsApp beta version 2.26.34.5, this new feature specifically aims to comply with legal regulations in some countries.

Channel administrators can now easily inform their followers that the images or videos they share were created or edited using AI tools thanks to this label. This feature increases the credibility of content on the platform while offering users more control and transparency over the media they see.

WhatsApp is rolling out a new tagging system for channel administrators to mark AI-generated content.

  • The feature is initially being rolled out to testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.34.5.

  • In regions where it is legally required, indicating that content is AI-generated becomes a legal requirement.

  • Administrators do not have the right to remove an AI content tag once it has been added.

AI Tag Increases Content Transparency

This new tool implemented by WhatsApp aims to directly inform users about the source of the content.

In cases where a shared post was generated by AI or modified using AI tools, channel administrators may be required to use this tag. This rule also applies to images created on third-party platforms other than Meta AI, such as ChatGPT or Gemini.

Tags Can Be Added Manually and Automatically

Channel administrators can use the “Add AI content tag” option from the menu that opens by pressing and holding on the post they are sharing.

In addition, WhatsApp’s advanced algorithms can detect AI-generated content and automatically add this tag. The tag is clearly displayed to followers in the lower left corner of the post, along with other information such as the number of views and timestamp.

It is stated that the Tagging Process is Permanent

WhatsApp emphasizes that this feature is a transparency tool. Therefore, once added, the AI tag cannot be undone or deleted. It is important for administrators to ensure that the content is AI-generated before sharing the post. Because the process is permanently recorded by the system, and subsequent changes to the content are not allowed.

The Feature is Being Rolled Out Gradually

Currently only available to a select group of users and beta testers, this feature will be rolled out to a wider audience in the coming weeks. It is expected that the feature will be available to all Android users worldwide through updates released on the Google Play Store. WhatsApp aims to improve user experience by accelerating legal compliance processes.
