WhatsApp Closed Critical Security Vulnerability

WhatsApp Closed Critical Security Vulnerability

WhatsApp has completely closed the encryption verification vulnerability that users use to determine whether they are blocked or not, with a server-side update.

WhatsApp has disabled the encryption verification technique that users use to see if they have been blocked by someone. Previously, when someone was blocked, the encryption verification process was incorrect and this was considered an indicator of the blocked status.

However, this vulnerability was completely closed with the server-side update made by WhatsApp. Now, even if you are blocked, encryption verification is completed without any problems. This change was made available simultaneously for both Android and iOS users and was applied directly through the servers without the need to update the application.

  • WhatsApp has invalidated the encryption verification technique used to detect blocking status.
  • The change was implemented server-side without requiring any application updates.
  • The encryption verification feature now works correctly in blocked chats.
  • It is no longer possible for users to detect blocking using this method.

Cryptographic Verification Was Misinterpreted Due to an Error

The method that emerged before was actually a technical glitch rather than a security vulnerability. WhatsApp continues to maintain its end-to-end encryption protocol in chats with blocked individuals.

However, the automatic verification system was failing for blocked users and creating a manual verification request. Many users started to use this as a hint.

WhatsApp quickly resolved this technical glitch and prevented users from manipulating the operation of the platform.

Updated on Server Side

The most striking aspect of this fix is that no new version is released on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Since WhatsApp implemented this change directly through its servers, users did not need to update the application. Tests prove that this technique no longer works even on older app versions.

Blocking Symptoms Did Not Change

Although the encryption verification technique is no longer effective, the classic ways to understand that you have been blocked.

Messages sent to an individual remain on a gray tick mark, their profile photo does not appear, or search attempts are constantly unsuccessful, which continue to provide more reliable signs that you have been blocked. Although none of these techniques provide formal verification, when combined they can offer a high degree of accuracy.

System Quickly Optimized

WhatsApp took action and corrected the situation shortly after this method became widespread. This shows the company’s determination to fix minor inconsistencies on the platform. Since the system in question was never presented as an official feature, the company was not obliged to make any statement on this subject.
