Using Magic Keyboard is More Practical with iPadOS 26.5

Using Magic Keyboard is More Practical with iPadOS 26.5

iOS and iPadOS 26.5 updates bring automatic Bluetooth pairing support via USB-C for the Magic Keyboard and other Apple accessories.

With the iOS and iPadOS 26.5 updates it released at the beginning of this month, Apple makes the use of accessories such as Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse more practical. This new version brings the ease of communication we are accustomed to in the Mac ecosystem to iPhone and iPad devices.

Previously, users could connect Magic accessories to iPhone or iPad devices via USB-C cable. However, as soon as the cable connection was cut off, the relationship between the devices ended completely.

Automatic Bluetooth pairing via USB-C

The innovation introduced with iOS and iPadOS 26.5 enables automatic Bluetooth pairing during wired contact. In this way, users can continue to use their accessories wirelessly after removing the cable.

This feature, discovered by Aaron Perris during the beta process, exactly matches the way accessories work on Mac computers. Now, once users connect Magic accessories via cable, the devices remain paired for future use.

This change is expected to provide significant convenience, especially for iPad users. Although the use of Magic Keyboard or Trackpad is more limited on the iPhone side, this can speed up the workflow for iPad users.

Possible relationship complications

The new system can also create a confusing situation for users in some cases. If a user uses the Magic Keyboard with both a Mac and an iPad, the auto-pair feature may cause the device to unexpectedly connect to the iPad.

This could lead to a scenario where accessories will always gravitate towards the iPad rather than the Mac. It seems that Apple designed this feature to eliminate the need for manual pairing that users experience when switching between devices.

The update in question stands out as part of Apple’s strategy to make its first-party accessories more integrated with portable devices. How users will find this new contact experience will become clear over time.

What do you think about this new contact feature coming with iOS and iPadOS 26.5?
