The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a new ban on advanced foreign-made robots. This step specifically targets humanoid robots developed by China-based technology companies.

In a statement, the FCC stated that bipedal humanoid robots and quadrupedal robotic dogs pose unacceptable risks to national security and personal safety. Official assessments indicated that these devices could create supply chain vulnerabilities and cybersecurity threats.

New Restrictions for Security Reasons

The ban also covers power inverters manufactured by foreign companies. However, the new regulations include some exemptions for certain countries and product types.

The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security have already granted exemptions for some power inverter models. Companies are encouraged to apply for conditional exemption from approval for their products.

The ban does not cover robots already purchased. Moreover, retailers can continue to sell robot models that have already received approval from the FCC’s equipment authorization process.

The US government’s authority to purchase robots from abroad according to its own requirements is kept confidential. This suggests that public institutions may be exempt from the restrictions.

Unitree’s Impact on the Industry

China-based robot manufacturer Unitree stands out as one of the main targets of this new ban. The company was actively selling its humanoid robots and robotic dogs, which gained popularity through social media videos, in the US market.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr supported the decision in a statement on social media. Carr emphasized that this step was taken to secure critical US supply chains.
