Under-Screen Facial Recognition is Coming to Android

Under-Screen Facial Recognition is Coming to Android

Metalenz announced Polar ID, an under-screen facial recognition technology for Android devices. The new system is preparing to come to phones in 2027.

After it was revealed that Google will not offer advanced facial recognition hardware in the new Pixel 11 series, the company called Metalenz attracts attention with its under-screen facial recognition technology. This new system, called Polar ID, makes the facial recognition hardware on smartphones invisible by hiding it under the OLED screen.

This technology, developed by Metalenz, takes up much less space than the facial recognition systems used in current iPhone models. Using optical metasurfaces, the system works by directing light to the sensors through a single nanostructured lens.

How does Polar ID technology work?

The new system not only captures an image, but also collects polarization data that analyzes how light reflects off surfaces. This feature allows the system to distinguish between a real human face and silicone 3D masks.

Developed thanks to the collaboration with Qualcomm, Polar ID shows high performance even in dark environments. This technology, which requires thinning only a small part of the screen, does not suffer from the loss of image quality seen in under-screen camera systems.

Release calendar

Metalenz states that the Polar ID system will begin to be used on smartphones and laptops by 2027. Under-screen integration is expected to become widespread in 2028.

It has been confirmed that the under-screen facial recognition technology, known as Project Toscana, which Google has been working on for a long time, will not be included in the Pixel 11 series. It is not yet clear whether the technology developed by the company has a connection with Metalenz. What do you think about this new under-screen facial recognition technology that we will start to see on Android devices in the coming years?
