TSMC Presses the Button for 1.4nm Chip

TSMC Presses the Button for 1.4nm Chip

TSMC has accelerated its 1.4 nanometer chip production schedule by a year. All the details about the new process, planned to start in April 2027, are here.

Taiwan-based semiconductor giant TSMC has announced a major step forward in the technology world by accelerating its 1.4 nanometer (14A) manufacturing process. According to the latest information, the company aims to start trial production of its most advanced chip technology, the 1.4 nanometer chip, a year ahead of schedule, in April 2027.

The work carried out at its massive facilities in Taichung demonstrates how quickly the Taiwanese manufacturer is increasing its capacity to maintain its leadership in the global market. With this strategic breakthrough, mass production is planned to begin in the second half of 2027, and competition in the sector is expected to intensify significantly as a result of this development.

  • TSMC is accelerating its production schedule by one year, moving the 1.4 nanometer production process from 2028 to 2027.
  • Trial production is planned to begin in April 2027 for the first of the four factories being built in Taichung.
  • The company is making a massive investment of $49 billion in total for these advanced production facilities.
  • The construction of the second factory, named P2, is expected to be completed by October 2027.

Construction Process at Taichung Facilities Progressing Rapidly

The project launched by TSMC to create its 1.4 nanometer production capacity continues at a rapid pace in the technology park in Taichung. The first factory, whose foundations were laid in October of last year, has completed its steel frame structure.

Currently, wall and floor construction is ongoing, and the facility is targeted to be fully completed in early 2025. This rapid progress proves the company’s commitment to bringing new generation chip technologies to the market.

Preparations for the Second Factory are Nearing Completion

In the P2 factory, which constitutes the second phase of the project, concrete foundation work has been completed and the steel construction phase has begun. According to data shared by the administration, if the planned schedule is adhered to, the construction of this factory will be completed in October 2025. Thus, the first two factories will be ready for mass production at full capacity in October 2027.

Future Plans and Investment Strategy are Taking Shape

Work on the third and fourth parts of the facility is now in its initial stages. TSMC has obtained the necessary construction license for its third factory and is in the application process for a fourth facility. Both factories are planned to be completed by 2028, with a six-month gap between them.

These facilities, realized with a massive budget of $49 billion, constitute a critical infrastructure that will allow TSMC to maintain its position as the world’s leading contract chip manufacturer for many years to come.
