The Limits of Autonomous Delivery: Courier Robots Need Human Assistance

DoorDash pays drivers to load orders onto its autonomous delivery robot, Dot. We examined the logistics processes in the company’s autonomous systems.

DoorDash continues to rely on human assistance for basic tasks that robots cannot now perform on their own, even as it increases its investments in autonomous delivery technologies. The company pays drivers approximately $5 to place restaurant orders into its autonomous delivery robots called Dot.

Introduced in September 2025 and deployed in the Phoenix area, Dot can travel at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour thanks to its lidar, radar, and camera systems. However, these wheeled robots still require human assistance to load delivery packages.

The Human-Assisted Process of Robotic Delivery

A DoorDash driver working in Mesa, Arizona, stated that he received an offer to load a robot through his app in July. The driver had to photograph and document every step of the process as he placed the order he received from the restaurant into the Dot robot waiting in the parking lot.

For this process, which took approximately five minutes, the driver was paid $5. Another driver who had a similar experience stated that he traveled a short distance in the Scottsdale area to load the robot and that this process provided a quick return.

DoorDash officials explained that this application is a limited pilot study launched to support restaurants during peak hours and create additional benefit opportunities for drivers beyond traditional deliveries. The company emphasizes that while autonomous technologies continue to scale, drivers will remain a fundamental part of the platform.

Logistical Challenges and Future Plans

Experts note that some restaurants may find it more cost-effective to delegate these types of tasks to DoorDash’s independent contractors. A similar situation occurred previously with Waymo robotaxis, where drivers were tasked with closing doors left open by passengers.

DoorDash recently announced that it has received commercial operating approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its drone delivery service, DoorDash Air. The company acknowledges that logistics processes, such as loading orders onto the vehicle and integrating local infrastructure, are a bigger challenge than the drone technology itself.

Real-time inventory management and systems to be installed at points such as restaurant back doors will make drone delivery scalable. The company plans to share more details about its drone service later in the year.
