The era of cheap smartphones is ending, bringing about a significant structural change in the technology world. A new report by Counterpoint Research predicts a 40% drop in the production of smartphones under $200 by 2030.

This change means that approximately 230 million devices will be withdrawn from the market worldwide. This situation carries a risk that could make it difficult for users, especially those living in low-income areas, to access the internet.

Artificial Intelligence and Rising Component Costs

At the heart of this contraction in the smartphone market lies the high demand for AI data centers. This increase in demand is causing RAM and chipset costs to rise across the electronics industry. Manufacturers are opting to focus on higher-spec products instead of entry-level devices with low profit margins. Phones with minimal technical specifications are being replaced by devices focused on portable media production. This situation is creating a structural shock in the technology sector. In an environment where component costs are climbing, high device specifications justify higher price tags. Many consumers are tending to use their current phones for longer periods due to rising prices. This is leading to longer device replacement cycles for both consumers and sellers. The refurbished phone market is becoming a valuable alternative in this new period. The evolution of device insurance plans into longer-term subscriptions is also emerging as a factor supporting the second-hand market.

Connectivity Issues and the Future of the Market

Counterpoint Research analyst Yang Wang notes that the market will recover on a unit basis, but the budget segment will not return to its former position. While the total market size remains comparable, there is a significant differentiation in terms of price.

Opportunities are now shifting towards mainstream devices with better features and premium products. However, high-end devices cannot compensate for the entire lost entry-level volume.

One of the biggest concerns is that the loss of new, affordable smartphones increases the risk of connectivity issues. This poses a significant obstacle for users connecting to the internet for the first time in low-income markets.

While budget-friendly phones are not expected to disappear completely in the future, it is assumed that options will be quite limited. Second-hand devices, easy-to-use phones, and niche solutions appear to be candidates to fill this gap.

This change in the technology world heralds a new era in portable device ownership and internet access. So, do you think this upward trend in smartphone prices will further deepen the digital divide?

The era of cheap smartphones is ending. Due to the demand for AI data centers, the production of phones under $200 may decrease by 2030.
