Sony introduces its new flagship Xperia 1 VIII on May 13. It makes a difference with its mysterious light ring, 48 MP periscope camera and Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.
Especially in shared promotional videos, the element that surrounds the camera and is called the glowing ring creates great excitement among technology enthusiasts. Whether this feature, which Sony emphasizes with the phrase “full circle”, is just a visual show or a modern interpretation of the notification LED that has been longed for years, will become clear tomorrow morning.
Sony is introducing its new flagship Xperia 1 VIII on May 13 at 11:00 Japan time.
The camera module of the device includes a mysterious lighting system called a “glowing ring”.
On the camera side, Sony gives up the variable zoom mechanism and instead switches to a huge 48 Megapixel periscope sensor.
Big Change in Design: Square Camera Module and Light Ring
Sony is making the vertical camera array, which has been maintaining for years, history with the Xperia 1 VIII. Leaked CAD drawings and official images show that there will be a square-shaped camera island on the back of the device and close to the center.
However, the real striking point is the light-diffusing ring placed around the camera lenses, rather than the design itself. This ring shines prominently in videos labeled “Next Xperia” released by Sony.
What is a Ring of Light? Notification LED or Marketing Strategy?
There are three main theories in the technology world about the function of this mysterious ring. The first and strongest possibility is that it is a return of the notification LED that we are no longer used to seeing on smartphones.
Similar to the “Glyph” interface on Nothing Phone models, this ring is expected to light up in different colors for incoming calls or notifications. The second theory is that this light only works with a special case accessory. The third and more pessimistic possibility is that this glow is just a visual effect used in promotional videos. However, Sony’s emphasis on “full circle” greatly strengthens the possibility that this is a hardware innovation.
A New Era in Camera Performance: Quality-Oriented Approach
Sony says goodbye to the “continuously variable optical zoom” mechanism, which is the biggest distinguishing feature of the Xperia 1 series, in this model. Instead of zoom provided by complex lens movements in previous models, the Xperia 1 VIII model uses a huge periscope sensor with a resolution of 48 Megapixels and a size of 1/1.56 inches.
Offering a fixed 3x optical zoom, this new structure prevents light loss caused by lens movements, allowing much sharper and more detailed photographs to be taken. Sony follows a strategy that focuses directly on image quality rather than range.
Technical Specifications: Snapdragon 8 Elite and Xperia AI
On the hardware side, the Xperia 1 VIII comes with Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful processor, Snapdragon 8 Elite (5th Generation). While this processor is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM, Sony is expected to focus on new artificial intelligence features called “Xperia AI” on the software side this year. The 6.5-inch OLED HDR screen with a 120Hz refresh rate continues Sony’s cinematic tradition with its 19.5:9 format.
Other prominent features of the device include 2-day battery life, 45W fast charging support and 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is indispensable for audio enthusiasts. Among the color options, premium tones such as Graphite Black, Iolite Silver and Garnet Red attract attention. With the official launch tomorrow morning, all the details of the device and the curious sales price will become clear.
