SK Hynix Warns: Major RAM Crisis Expected in 2027

SK Hynix Warns: Major RAM Crisis Expected in 2027

SK Hynix CEO warned that the biggest memory shortage in history could occur in 2027 due to increasing demand for artificial intelligence.

SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung announced that the technology world may face the biggest memory shortage in its history in 2027, with the impact of rapidly increasing artificial intelligence investments around the world. The South Korea-based chip giant stated that the excessive demand, especially for high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, is pushing the limits of its production capacities and creating a significant bottleneck in the global supply chain.

The supply burden expected to be experienced in these components, which are the backbone of the technology branch, has the potential to directly affect not only company profits but also digital transformation processes.

  • The development of artificial intelligence technologies exponentially increases the need for memory chips.
  • SK Hynix management predicts that global chip supply may drop critically by 2027.
  • Production difficulties of HBM chips deepen the supply gap in the sector.

Artificial Intelligence Investments Restrict Supply

The process power required to train and run artificial intelligence models also requires a huge memory requirement. The race to expand the capacities of information centers has increased the dependence on HBM chips in particular.

These chips determine the performance of the system by working in harmony with artificial intelligence processors thanks to their high information transfer rates. However, manufacturers are racing against time to build new production facilities to meet such a rapid demand.

Tech giants may struggle to find the memory chips needed to keep their massive data centers afloat.

Production Processes Give a Tough Test

Memory production is a very complex and lengthy process. While it takes years to establish a new factory (fab) and start mass production, technological updates of existing facilities also require significant capital.

SK Hynix emphasizes that this situation has turned into a structural problem that will affect not only a single manufacturer, but the entire global technology ecosystem. Investors and technology companies are concerned that the supply problem will put upward pressure on prices.

Sectoral Effects Will Be Long-Term

It is assumed that this expected crisis will be a long-term period rather than a short-term fluctuation. Hardware manufacturers are working hard to diversify their supply chains and develop alternative production procedures.

However, as long as the acceleration in the field of artificial intelligence does not stop, it is predicted that demand will continue to outpace supply. Cutting experts state that strategic stock management and production efficiency will play a critical role in this process.

This memory shortage, which may occur in 2027, may deeply affect many sectors, from consumer electronics to automotive.
