Samsung’s Artificial Intelligence Accelerator Gaia Revealed

Samsung’s Artificial Intelligence Accelerator Gaia Revealed

Samsung returns to the computer market with the 4nm artificial intelligence chip Gaia. The technical specifications and details of the NPU-focused hardware are in our news.

South Korean technology giant Samsung is preparing to make an original and controversial entry into the computer market.

According to the latest reports, the company is working on new hardware designed directly for personal computers (PC) and focusing on artificial intelligence processes. This new artificial intelligence accelerator chip, codenamed “Gaia” and produced from a 4 nanometer production process, aims to locally increase the artificial intelligence computing power of devices.

This move by Samsung symbolizes the company’s return to the PC processor market after more than a decade.

A New Era in the PC Market with the Gaia Chip

The rapid spread of artificial intelligence technologies pushes hardware manufacturers to determine new strategies.

Cloud-based artificial intelligence services are increasingly being replaced by on-device processes, increasing the need for powerful neural processing units (NPU).

At this point, Samsung comes into play with a special artificial intelligence accelerator that will be positioned next to the main processor of the computers.

Unlike traditional processors, Gaia is optimized to run all productive AI tasks and large language models locally.

The NPU experience that Samsung has achieved with Exynos processors in portable devices is being adapted to the PC environment this time. Thanks to its 4nm architecture, the chip is assertive in terms of high power efficiency and performance per watt, allowing computers to handle complex calculations without consuming battery life.

Users have the opportunity to benefit from real-time language translation, scene creation and advanced productivity tools without sending data to cloud servers.

Bottleneck Overcome with In-Memory Processing (PIM) Technology

One of Samsung’s biggest advantages in the Gaia project is the company’s undisputed power in memory production. Leaks show that the new artificial intelligence chip can work integrated with Samsung’s new generation “Processing-in-Memory” (PIM) technology. Under normal conditions, computers are always exchanging information between the processor and RAM.

However, this creates a significant performance bottleneck in artificial intelligence models working with huge data sets.

PIM technology eliminates this information traffic by performing calculation processes directly in the memory or in a position very close to the memory.

Thus, the process speed reaches incredible levels and power consumption is minimized. By operating the Gaia chip in perfect harmony with its own memory products, Samsung achieves an integration advantage that its competitors cannot easily offer.

The information obtained clearly proves that the technology giant wants to have a say not only in the portable world but also in the future of personal computers. More concrete information and performance test results about the Gaia project are expected to emerge in the coming months.
