Outside CRT Monitor Inside Gaming Computer: Cyberpunk Opens

A Reddit user turned an old CRT monitor into a modern gaming PC by equipping it with Ryzen 7600X and RX 6900 XT.

A Reddit user attracted attention by turning an old and broken CRT monitor he found among electronic waste into a high-performance gaming computer. The user placed modern hardware inside the monitor, using only its outer casing.

Although this extraordinary project reminds us of old generation computers with its nostalgic appearance, the components inside can easily run current games. Discipline_GreatThis work, shared by the username, attracted great attention among hardware enthusiasts.

Modern hardware in a nostalgic case

At the heart of the computer is the AMD Ryzen 7600X processor and Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card. The system is supported by 16GB DDR5 RAM and MSI B650 Gaming Plus motherboard.

The imaging need is met by a 17.3-inch laptop panel placed on the front of the case, offering 1440p resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. The cooling system is provided by six 120mm fans placed inside the case.

On the software side, Nobara Linux, a game-oriented Fedora distribution, was preferred. A retro vibe was achieved using a Windows XP theme to complete the look.

Performance and security together

The owner of the project states that one of the reasons he chose this design is as a deterrent against theft. He states that the safe, which looks like an old monitor, will not attract the attention of thieves.

As for gaming performance, this custom chassis can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p resolution at between 90 and 100 FPS with mid-range ray tracing settings. Although there have been some criticisms regarding cooling and internal layout, it is a very difficult process to fit this equipment into such a narrow space.

In discussions on Reddit, both the nostalgic value and technical success of the project are appreciated. Do you think it’s a sensible idea to turn an old monitor into a modern gaming PC, or should it just remain a hobby project?
