OpenAI Signs Signature for Artificial Intelligence Phone

OpenAI Signs Signature for Artificial Intelligence Phone

OpenAI, in collaboration with MediaTek, started to develop its artificial intelligence-focused smartphone, which it plans to launch in 2027.

OpenAI is taking its aims in the hardware world one step further and collaborating with MediaTek to develop its own artificial intelligence-focused smartphone. According to information shared by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this new device focuses on autonomous artificial intelligence spies that will replace classical application-based interfaces.

The project is aimed to go into mass production in the first half of 2027, and the device is expected to compete with upper segment models such as the Apple iPhone 18 Pro. With this breakthrough, OpenAI plans to overcome the limitations in the portable ecosystem and transform the user experience into a completely artificial intelligence-centered structure.

Custom 2nm Processor and Hardware Architecture

OpenAI and its MediaTek subsidiary are focusing on a custom processor developed with TSMC’s 2 nanometer manufacturing technology. This special chip, built on the Dimensity 9600 series, is designed to work with OpenAI’s self-developed Agent OS operating system.

The hardware architecture of the device combines a low-power NPU for missions that always require local processing, and a powerful second NPU that performs more complex logical inferences. In addition, an advanced HDR scene signal processor and high-speed LDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage units are used to enable the device to analyze its surroundings in real time.

Agents that Replace Applications

This new device from OpenAI aims to eliminate the need for users to switch between different applications to fulfill their missions. The device uses a hybrid structure that processes easy tasks reliably in the local environment, while transferring processes requiring heavier calculations to cloud servers.

This strategy allows OpenAI to operate independently of API restrictions from platform owners such as Apple and Google. The company targets a total sales volume of 30 million units between 2027 and 2028 and plans to launch the device by combining it with premium subscription packages such as ChatGPT Pro.

This development may also increase MediaTek’s influence on future 6G standards and artificial intelligence-focused chip designs.

How do you think this new generation artificial intelligence phone, which replaces applications, will change the smartphone market?
