Meta received a patent for a technology that can determine users’ emotional states by constantly analyzing their tone of voice and their surroundings. This new system aims to always carry out emotional monitoring through everyday devices.

The patent, published on July 2, describes a structure that records all the user’s voice communications and combines it with contextual information such as time, position, and user activity. The system aims to interpret emotional indicators by transferring the obtained data to a machine collection model.

Continuous Monitoring and Emotional Analysis

According to the information in the patent, this technology aims to increase the sensitivity of emotional inferences by synchronizing multi-modal sensor inputs. Meta suggests that this system can offer more precise guidance than personal trainers and optimize users’ workouts based on their emotional state.

The system can analyze not only the tone of voice, but also vocal connections such as laughter or sighing. It is also planned to create summaries of the user’s emotional tendencies by matching voice inputs with information such as medication use.

This technology is considered as a module of Meta’s strategy to strengthen the connection between the online and offline worlds. The company states that such patents are not always implemented and may only represent a concept.

Past Similar Initiatives and Privacy Concerns

A similar technology trial was previously carried out by Amazon with its Halo Band product. This device, released in 2020, was able to analyze voice tone, but due to intense reactions, Amazon had to disable the microphones in later models.

Amazon ended the Halo series completely in 2023. It is not yet clear whether Meta will turn this patented technology into a product.

The Meta spokesperson emphasizes that the patent received does not mean that the technology will definitely be implemented. The fact that the company is working on such a tracking technology brings the debates about the protection of personal data and privacy back to the agenda.
