Apple is expected to renew the Mac Studio design in 2028 due to the high power needs of the M7 Ultra processor.
The design change that Apple planned for its popular workstation Mac Studio appears to have been postponed until 2028. It is stated that this major innovation will become necessary due to the high power needs that the M7 Ultra processor will bring.
The new Mac Studio model with the M5 Ultra processor is expected to be released later this year. However, this model will continue to maintain its current design language and will not offer any major differences in its external appearance.
Power Requirement and Cooling Need of M7 Ultra
According to the information shared by Mark Gurman, it is predicted that Apple will skip the Pro, Max and Ultra variants in the M6 series and focus directly on the M7 series. With the introduction of the M7 Ultra processor in 2028, significant changes will need to be made in the internal structure of the device.
The high-performance structure of the new processor requires a more advanced cooling solution, especially to manage intense artificial intelligence workloads. In this context, a much larger cooler block is expected to be used in M7 Ultra powered Mac Studio models.
It is assumed that the M7 processor family will offer a 56 percent higher memory bandwidth compared to the M5 series. These technical improvements will allow the device to run the most powerful artificial intelligence tasks and games that require high visual fidelity at maximum settings.
High Costs and Market Accessibility
Apple’s recent increases in device prices make it difficult for an M7 Ultra-equipped Mac Studio to be available to the masses. Increasing DRAM costs push the price tags of these upper segment workstations to quite high levels.
Currently, a Mac Studio with an M3 Ultra processor with 96GB of combined memory retails for $14,299. The M7 Ultra model, which will be released in 2028, is expected to be offered at a similarly high cost.
