Device, System, Hardware, Original, Mac Mini
One of Apple’s newest models, the Mac Mini with the M4 processor, has been transformed into a portable device, surpassing the limits of a desktop, through an extraordinary modification project. Developed by Shing Solutions and named Mac Nano, this custom-made computer combines brand-new hardware in a 3D-printed body. This project demonstrates how hardware designed for a desktop can be adapted to a portable form factor. The device continues to operate without compromising performance stability by retaining the original Mac Mini motherboard and cooling system.
Mac Nano Hardware and Design Details
In the Mac Nano project, the M4 Mac Mini was completely disassembled, and the motherboard and original blower-type fan system were transferred to the new 3D-printed body. Because Apple’s factory thermal design is maintained, the device continues its original cooling performance even in its portable chassis.
The front of the device features a 7-inch touchscreen display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Immediately below the screen is a compact QWERTY keyboard with an integrated touchpad.
The keyboard, which initially operated wirelessly, has been redesigned to be powered directly from the Mac Nano via USB, eliminating the need for an external charger.
Game Controls and Power Management
Physical game controllers have been added to the sides of the Mac Nano using circuit boards taken from Nintendo Joy-Con Charging Grip accessories. These controllers connect to the Mac directly via cable instead of Bluetooth.
Because macOS does not natively support wired Joy-Con connection, controller inputs are enabled via Steam’s controller pairing system. Connectivity to peripherals is provided by a dedicated three-port USB hub system built into the device.
The device is equipped with a special battery system to operate without being plugged into a power source. Rechargeable cells and a power distribution system inside the chassis make it possible to use the M4 Mac Mini motherboard without external power connection.
The wide grips on the sides of the 3D-printed chassis make the device easy to carry and use. When all these components are put together, the brand-new functions of the Mac Mini on the macOS side are fully preserved.
Do you think that converting desktop computers into portable devices like this could start a new trend for future hardware modifications?
