Lexar has made a mark in the world of portable storage with its new creation unveiled at IFA 2026 in Berlin. The Lexar Muse portable SSD boasts the title of the world’s thinnest external drive with a maximum thickness of 3.8 mm.

The device features a precisely machined unibody metal casing measuring 80 x 48 mm. This design was specifically developed to meet the portability and durability requirements of mobile content creators on the go.

Technical Details and Innovative Magnetic Connection

Lexar undertook quite complex engineering work to achieve this ultra-thin form factor. The company used a custom PCB architecture, high-density NAND stacking technology, and an optimized internal component layout for this design.

The device’s body measures 3.8 mm at its thickest point, while the edges are as thin as 1 mm. This structure ensures that the device remains both lightweight and quite compact.

Instead of a traditional USB Type-C port, the device uses a magnetic data connection called PogoPina. This system ensures that the connection always remains perfectly aligned thanks to spring pins and N52 class neodymium magnets.

The SnapLink Magnetic Cable holds securely to the drive thanks to these pins. With the help of the magnetic sleeve, the device can be directly attached to the back of MagSafe-compatible iPhone models.

This integration allows iPhone users to record Apple ProRes 4K video directly to the SSD at 120fps. This feature offers a great advantage, especially for portable content creators who produce high-quality images.

Despite its size, the Lexar Muse doesn’t compromise on performance. The drive can achieve sequential read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s.

Capacity Options and Release Schedule

The new generation storage solution offers users two different capacity options to meet different needs. The Lexar Muse will be released with two different storage capacities: 512 GB and 1 TB.

The company announced that it plans to release this new SSD model in the fourth quarter of 2026. Details regarding the pricing of the product have not yet been shared by the company.
