Jony Ive and OpenAI Join Force: First AI Phone Coming in 2027

Jony Ive and OpenAI Join Force: First AI Phone Coming in 2027

The first artificial intelligence phone developed by OpenAI and design genius Jony Ive will be released in 2027. Audio-focused design details that do not require a MediaTek processor and screen are in our news.

A collaboration that will shake things up in the world of technology is getting ready to bear concrete fruits. On the one hand, OpenAI, the pioneer of the generative artificial intelligence revolution, and on the other hand, Jony Ive, the name behind Apple’s iconic designs. The “artificial intelligence phone” project, which has remained a mystery for a long time, has been kicked into high gear. Latest reports from the industry indicate that the device will enter the mass production phase in the first half of 2027. This date shows that the project is progressing much faster than expected, compared to the previously targeted year of 2028.

Are We Saying Goodbye to Screens? A Different Experience is on the Way

This device aims to radically change the smartphone form factor as we know it. Instead of a large screen on which we switch between applications as in traditional devices, the focus is on a structure that focuses on sound and environment detection capabilities. This hardware, which Jony Ive’s design studio LoveFrom and the OpenAI team worked on, centers on the concept of “AI Agent”.

Users will interact with the device by talking to it or by sensing the device’s environment. This phone, on which GPT-4 and next generation models will be built-in, will not only be an assistant that answers questions, but also an active assistant that can take action on the user’s behalf (such as buying a flight ticket, managing a calendar, completing complex workflows).

Surprise Partnership in Technical Hardware: MediaTek and 2nm Technology

On the hardware side, a strategic choice stands out. According to information from industry analysts, OpenAI decided to move forward with MediaTek instead of Qualcomm on the processor side. It is said that the customized processor that will be at the heart of the device will be a Dimensity 9600-based chipset, which is planned to be produced with TSMC’s advanced 2nm (N2P) technology.

This processor will have a dual NPU (Neural Processing Unit) architecture not only for speed but also to perform complex artificial intelligence calculations on the device. In addition, it is supported by LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage technologies, aiming to provide a lag-free artificial intelligence experience.

Competitors and the Harsh Realities of the Market

This move by OpenAI and Jony Ive is a direct response to the integration of Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” and Google’s “Gemini”. However, the market has not been very hospitable to “AI-focused hardware” so far.

  • Humane AI Pin:The device, which was released with great expectations but could not find a response from the users due to the lack of a screen and heating problems, came to a halt in its operations after it was purchased by HP.

  • Rabbit R1:Although it attracted attention with its price of $ 199, it was disappointing due to software inadequacies and high latency.

  • Apple and Samsung:Current smartphone giants are adding artificial intelligence as a feature to their devices, which already have billions of users. OpenAI, on the other hand, is taking a big risk by trying to make artificial intelligence not a feature but the device itself.

Strategic Timing and Future Vision

Another reason behind OpenAI’s acceleration of its hardware project is the company’s transition to a for-profit structure and the expected public offering (IPO) process. It wants to show investors that it is not just a software company, but also offers a hardware ecosystem that can challenge Apple and Samsung. OpenAI, which acquired Jony Ive’s startup “io” for $6.4 billion, aims to minimize the margin of error by including former Apple hardware engineers in its staff.

Time will tell whether this device, which is expected to enter mass production in 2027, will become a natural part of our daily lives, beyond being a physical gadget. But one thing is certain: Jony Ive and Sam Altman duo seem determined to open a new page in the world of personal computing.
