BMW M executives have given the green light to the new M1 magnificent car idea that has been awaited for years. Here are the latest developments about BMW’s legendary model.
The idea of the new M1, which has been on the agenda of the BMW M department for a long time, was voiced again by the senior managers of the brand. BMW M CEO Frank van Meel and BMW M Design President Oliver Heilmer made valuable statements about this special project during their meetings at the Le Mans weekend.
Although an official production schedule or technical details have not been shared yet, it was noteworthy that two critical names pointed to the same car. This shows that BMW has reopened its magnificent mid-engined car paperwork.
New M1 message from BMW M executives
BMW M CEO Frank van Meel has made no secret of his interest in the all-new M1 model and has openly stated his desire to develop a new M1. BMW M Design President Oliver Heilmer stated that if he was given unlimited budget and freedom, his choice would be the M1.
These meetings took place during the evaluations of the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse, prepared by the brand for electric high-performance vehicles. Although this concept was the main focus of the conversations, it was observed that BMW M left the door open to the idea of a special model that would sit at the top of its product range.
There is no prototype announcement or mass production decision for the new M1 at this stage. Frank van Meel’s statements reflect a live idea within the brand rather than a direct project announcement.
The BMW M1 is an iconic model that was produced between 1978 and 1981 and holds another place in the history of the brand. This car, coded E26, is known as the first and only mid-engined car that BMW put into mass production.
The original M1 produced 277 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque with its 3,453 cc inline six-cylinder engine. Supported by a 5-speed manual ZF transmission, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
Although BMW released high-performance models such as M3, M5 and XM after the M1, it did not fill the gap of superior mid-engine cars. The M1 Homage in 2008 and the later Vision M Next concepts stood out as examples of efforts to fill this gap.
Technical uncertainties and future expectations
There is currently no definitive information about the power unit that will be used if a new M1 project is implemented. All electric, hybrid or internal combustion powered options are considered as possible.
It is rumored in the industry that BMW’s current S58 inline six-cylinder engine can be used in a new performance car with a hybrid system. However, there is no official information that this engine is directly associated with the new M1.
BMW M Concept Neue Klasse gives valuable clues about the future design language of the brand. If a new M1 model is produced, the aerodynamic surfaces and track-focused details in this concept are expected to be reflected in the new design.
In order to implement such a project, BMW needs to evaluate factors such as cost and market potential as well as engineering studies. The brand requires a strategic decision-making process in line with emission rules and commercial objectives.
The BMW M1 name still continues to have a strong presence in the performance world. Until an official announcement comes, the new M1 remains one of the most striking dream projects that the BMW M department is working on.
