The A20 Pro processor, expected to be introduced at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9th, is creating great excitement in the technology world. Planned for use in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, this new generation chipset is Apple’s first processor with 2nm manufacturing technology.
Leaked die-shot images on Weibo reveal significant design changes and a record number of GPU cores to increase graphics performance. This SoC, with its increased memory bus width thanks to new generation packaging technology, aims to reinforce Apple’s performance leadership in portable devices.
New Packaging Technology Increases Graphics Performance
With the A20 Pro, Apple is abandoning the classic InFO_PoP packaging solution and switching to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) technology. This technical change makes it possible to position memory chips side-by-side instead of stacking them directly on the SoC.
This allows the memory data bus width to be increased to 96 bits, providing a significant increase in memory bandwidth without needing the more valuable LPDDR6 standard.
This strategy is seen as a result of Apple’s efforts to offer high speed and efficiency together in its devices.
Record Breaking in GPU Core Count
Leaked die-shot images show that the A20 Pro will have a 7-core GPU architecture. This breakthrough will take the graphics processing power of the iPhone 18 Pro series and the developing foldable iPhone Fold model to the next level. On the CPU side, the classic structure consisting of two performance and four efficiency cores is retained. Instead of increasing the number of cores on the CPU side to maintain its superiority in single-core and multi-core performance, Apple prefers to push the limits of the existing architecture.
Increased Capacity in Efficiency Cores
Improvements are also noticeable in the efficiency-focused parts of the processor. The L2 cache capacity, which was 6MB in the A19 Pro model, has been increased to 8MB with the A20 Pro.
This increase allows for smoother management of background processes and overall system efficiency. While details about the Neural Engine and Image Signal Processor (ISP) units are not yet fully disclosed, leaks confirm that Apple has a larger scope for AI-focused processes.
