Apple officially introduced its new A20 Pro chip, manufactured with 2nm production technology, at an event. This new processor, which will be featured in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, aims to raise the bar in the world of portable computing.
Apple describes this new chip as exceptional hardware that sets a new standard for portable computing. The new architecture significantly increases the overall performance and power efficiency of the device.
Technical Innovations with the A20 Pro
The processor has a total of six CPU cores. This design includes two amazing new cores that, according to Apple, offer up to 20% faster speeds.
The company describes these cores as desktop-class and states that they are the fastest processing units in any smartphone. The remaining four efficiency cores help conserve battery life.
On the graphics side, there’s a significant improvement. The redesigned 7-core GPU promises up to 40% increase in graphics performance.
This GPU design is also supported by increased memory bandwidth. The new neural accelerators integrated into the GPU double FP8 performance compared to the previous generation.
This feature allows the device to run large language models natively. Apple emphasizes that the A20 Pro is the latest chip to run advanced models on the device.
Apple particularly highlights the width of the A20 Pro’s memory interface. This wide interface prevents bottlenecks in applications requiring high data traffic.
Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Thermal Management
The chip is equipped with an additional Neural Engine unit that increases the total number of cores to 32. This revamped unit offers twice the computing power compared to the previous generation.
In addition, this structure, which supports 8-bit floating-point mathematics, operates with a more efficient working principle. Apple states that this chip has the widest memory interface ever offered in an iPhone.
Thermal management plays a critical role in maintaining performance. The efficient heat dissipation in iPhone 18 Pro models allows the chip to reach its maximum capacity.
Apple has completely redesigned the silicon packaging for this purpose. Inspired by M-series chips, this special packaging directly connects the silicon and memory to the vapor chamber.
This contact helps to dissipate heat more efficiently and maintain performance. Heat management is particularly important in graphically intensive games or professional image editing processes.
Keeping the device cool allows the processor to operate at high frequencies for longer periods. The company directly compares the sustained performance of the A20 Pro to previous generations.
The A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro offers 40 percent more sustained performance compared to the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro. Compared to the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro, this difference is doubled.
