Apple’s A20 and A20 Pro processors, expected to be included in the next generation iPhone 18 models, are preparing to offer significant innovations with TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process. These new chips will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra models.
According to industry sources, Apple is on track to become the first company to use 2-nanometer manufacturing technology. This technology, along with GAA, or Gate-All-Around architecture, is ushering in a new era in chip design.
Significant changes in performance and efficiency
Unlike traditional FinFET designs, the GAA architecture surrounds the gate material from four sides, controlling power flow more precisely. This structure minimizes power loss within the chip, increasing efficiency.
According to leaked information, the new processors offer approximately 18 percent higher processing capacity compared to previous generations. Simultaneously, a reduction of about 30 percent in power consumption is expected.
These claims, shared on Weibo, are consistent with previous reports regarding TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing capacity. Apple aims to significantly improve the overall performance of its devices with these new generation chips.
Cost increase may be reflected in consumer prices
Technological improvements bring a significant cost burden, and Apple’s chip supply costs are expected to increase considerably. Information that emerged in January indicated that the cost of one A20 chip could be approximately 80 percent higher than that of an A19.
This situation, combined with the industry-wide memory crisis, is straining Apple’s production budget. Analysts suggest that this cost increase could translate into a $250 to $300 increase in the final consumer price of iPhone 18 Pro models.
