Intel has officially introduced its new generation of Xeon Diamond Rapids processors and Crescent Island graphics unit, set to revolutionize the data center world. According to details shared at the Hot Chips event, the new generation Diamond Rapids processors aim to raise the bar in server performance by offering up to 256 cores.

Equipped with Intel 18A-P manufacturing technology and advanced Foveros Direct 3D packaging solutions, these processors are designed to provide the high computing power that enterprise infrastructures need. The company also added the Crescent Island GPU solution, optimized for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing tasks, to its product family.

  • Processors Offer Next-Generation Architecture Features

The Diamond Rapids series stands out as a platform showcasing Intel’s hardware engineering capabilities. The processor includes a massive 28 GB of last-level cache (LCL). This architecture is based on an innovative layout where the information processing units are located externally and the input/output (I/O) units are located internally. Intermodular communication is achieved using the standard UCIe interface instead of EMIB technology, aiming to increase production efficiency. On the performance side, APX (Advanced Performance Extensions) and AMX (Advanced Matrix Extensions) support plays a critical role in handling contemporary artificial intelligence workloads. The 16-channel memory architecture allows the processor to handle demanding workloads without experiencing data bottlenecks.

Graphics Units Power Data Centers

Intel is also not neglecting server-oriented graphics solutions. The newly introduced Crescent Island is positioned as a dedicated graphics processor based on the Xe3P architecture. Featuring 32 Xe cores and 256 XMX modules, this GPU is specifically designed for large-scale computing and machine learning models. Offering up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory support, this card demonstrates its success in complex processes requiring high memory. Presented in a PCIe add-on card (AIC) form factor, the Crescent Island has a power consumption of 350W and can operate efficiently with air cooling. This breakthrough shows that Intel will increase its competitiveness in the data center market.
