Lexar Regional Manager announced that RAM prices may double by the end of the year. Here are the new situation and expectations in the memory market.
Lexar Australia and New Zealand Regional Manager Chris Xia announced that RAM prices are expected to double by the end of the year. It is stated that some price stability or discounted products seen in the market are actually due to efforts to deplete stocks.
Current artificial intelligence investments in the industry are causing major manufacturers such as Samsung, SK hynix and Micron to direct memory chip capacity to high bandwidth memories. This situation leads to a decrease in supply and an increase in prices on the consumer electronics side.
Efforts to deplete stocks mislead prices
Some retailers offer discounts on RAM kits or keep prices constant, often due to the desire to dispose of old stock. Distributors are releasing these old stocks to provide liquidity and make room for new incoming high-cost titles.
Low-cost stocks brought from other regions also create a temporary price advantage for consumers. However, when these stocks are depleted, it seems inevitable that retail prices will rise due to market realities and low supply.
Chris Xia advises consumers to buy RAM without waiting if they need it. Experts emphasize that waiting for prices to fall will not pay off in the long run.
Memory crisis affects entire tech industry
The memory chip crisis deeply affects not only desktop computers and laptops, but the entire hardware ecosystem. While computer shipments are expected to shrink by more than 10%, a decline of more than 25% is already observed in motherboard sales.
Increasing RAM and SSD costs are causing users to reconsider their decisions to build new systems. Smartphone manufacturers are also forced to either increase device prices or switch to lower memory configurations.
Even action camera manufacturers such as GoPro are going through a difficult period due to memory chip shortages and falling sales numbers.
How do you think these cost increases in the sector will affect the general technological products in the coming period?
