Google Cast Era Begins on iPhone

Google Cast Era Begins on iPhone

Apple is preparing to add Google Cast support to iPhone devices with iOS 27 within the scope of EU regulations. Here are the details about the new feature.

Apple is preparing to take an important step to comply with new regulations within the scope of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). It is stated that the company will add Google Cast support to iPhone devices with the iOS 27 update.

This breakthrough means Apple has integrated an alternative to AirPlay, its own wireless video transfer technology, into the system. It is stated that users can select AirPlay or other third-party frameworks as the default option for cross-device content transfer.

Third-party streaming support on the way

According to the information in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, it is thought that Apple made this change to meet DMA requirements. Google Cast support is planned to be offered to iPhone users as an Android-focused alternative.

Apple has not yet made a clear statement about whether the features in question will be available only within the European Union or globally. While the company has kept some regulatory features, such as alternative application stores, exclusive to the EU region in the past, it has made other innovations, such as emulators, available worldwide.

With the iOS 27 update, it is expected that steps will be taken to address other EU demands such as third-party app store support and installation of applications from external sources. Apple has previously expressed concerns that such regulations may pose security risks.

Regulations and restricted features

Reservations about the European Union’s Digital Markets Act caused Apple to not offer some features to users in Europe. This caused features such as Live Events and iPhone mirroring that came with macOS Tahoe to be missing in the European market.

iPhone mirroring has not been available to users in Europe since 2024. It remains unclear whether the changes that will come with iOS 27 will include these currently blocked features.

Apple is going through a strong process regarding DMA compliance, and these new steps are seen as part of the company’s stance against regulations.

How do you think Apple’s allowing third-party streaming technologies will affect the iPhone user experience?
