Official name: Commonwealth of the Bahamas

Capital: Nassau (on New Providence Island)

Location: In the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti & the Dominican Republic), southeast of Florida.

Area: Approximately 13,880 km²

Population: ~400,000 (2025 est.)

Official language: English

Currency: Bahamian dollar (BSD) – pegged to the US dollar (USD).

Government type: Parliamentary democracy, member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

🌍 Geography

The Bahamas consists of approximately 700 islands and 2,400 coral reefs (cays).

Only approximately 30 islands are inhabited.

The largest islands are: New Providence, Grand Bahama, Andros, Eleuthera, Exuma, and Abaco.

Known for its famous beaches, it is considered a tourist paradise with its shallow seas, coral reefs, and white sands.

📖 History

In 1492, Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

It was later colonized by the Spanish and English.

In 1718, England officially colonized it.

It was long known as a pirate haven (notably, the famous pirate Blackbeard lived here).

In 1973, it declared independence and joined the British Commonwealth.

💰 Economy

Tourism: The largest sector of the economy. More than 6 million tourists visit annually.

Financial services: It is an important banking and offshore financial center.

Fishing (especially lobster) and agriculture (citrus fruits and pineapples) are also small-scale.

Per capita income is above the Caribbean average, but income distribution is uneven.

Bahamian culture reflects African, British, and Caribbean influences.

The Junkanoo Festival is the most well-known traditional celebration (with music, dance, and costumes).

Seafood is very important in the local cuisine: Conch (sea snail), in particular, is considered the national dish.

Goombay and Rake-and-Scrape species are prominent in the music.

The climate is tropical.

Winters are mild and dry, while summers are hot and humid.

Hurricane season occurs between June and November.

The Bahamas’ seas are considered among the clearest in the world. Visibility can reach up to 60 meters.

Dean’s Blue Hole (202 m), the world’s deepest blue hole, is located on Long Island.

It is a frequent vacation and filming location in Hollywood films (e.g., the James Bond series).
