Does it make sense to print your own clothes with a 3D printer?

Is it possible to produce clothes using a 3D printer? We reviewed the cost and details of Matthew Trahan’s 3D printing fashion project.

YouTuber Matthew Trahan created a head-to-toe clothing set using a 3D printer. Trahan, who had previously printed musical instruments and various household items, this time stepped into the fashion world and designed his own clothes.

The prepared staff includes modules such as shirts, shorts, shoes, socks, belts, hats, wallets, bags, ties and glasses. Although the success of the project varies, the design of some modules is noteworthy.

3D Printing Technology and Fashion

Trahan used patterns shared online to create the clothes. While shoe design in particular stands out in terms of aesthetics, some modules such as shorts seem to be far from practical.

While 3D printers were used only for small accessories in the Project Runway race in 2015, today full clothes can now be printed. The hexagonal patterns used by Trahan can create a new production area for professional designers.

Cost and Process Analysis

The material cost of the project is limited to filament consumption of approximately $100. However, the $1,999 Prusa Core 1L printer, which is used for printing modules such as shorts, increases the cost significantly.

Trahan spent 33 hours modeling and 560 hours printing time to produce these clothes. The cost of electricity was very low, approximately $13.30, compared to the US average.

As a result, you can design your own clothes if you have a high-quality 3D printer. However, for those looking for a practical solution, classical methods or ready-made clothing products still seem more logical.

Do you think 3D printers could become a common production tool in the fashion department in the future?
