Critical Update from Apple to Old iPhones: iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 15.8.8 Released

Critical Update from Apple to Old iPhones: iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 15.8.8 Released

Apple released iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 15.8.8 updates that close security vulnerabilities for older iPhone and iPad models. Critical patches are available for many devices from iPhone 6s to iPhone X.

While Apple focuses on new generation operating systems, it has proven once again that it does not forget the millions of people using its old devices. The technology giant has officially released iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 15.8.8 updates, which include critical security patches for older iPhone and iPad models that do not support current versions such as iOS 18 and iOS 17.

These updates focus directly on closing system vulnerabilities and protecting user data rather than introducing new features. This move is vital to maintain a safe usage experience for devices that are actively used and are now approaching the end of their hardware life.

  • Apple shared two new security updates for older model iPhones and iPads that do not support iOS 17 and above.

  • iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 15.8.8 versions make devices more resistant to cyber threats by closing critical vulnerabilities in the system.

  • The update includes popular older models such as iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and the first generation iPhone SE.

Security is at the forefront: Why is the update released now?

In the tech world, software support often focuses on new devices. However, Apple continues to periodically touch even devices considered “old” to ensure the security of users in its ecosystem. These new versions do not contain any visual changes or new applications. Instead, it includes code improvements to prevent vulnerabilities in the kernel and attacks that may come through the internet browser.

In particular, the fact that cyber attackers discover vulnerabilities in old operating systems and target these devices is seen as the biggest factor in Apple’s release of these updates. If you are using a device that is deprived of the innovations brought by iOS 18, these interim updates extend the life of your device for a while, if not in technical terms, then in terms of security.

Which Models Receive This Update?

When we look at the list published by Apple, we see that a wide group of devices benefit from this support. If you have one of the devices below, you can download these critical packages by following “Settings > General > Software Update”.

Devices Receiving iOS 16.7.16 Update:

This version is generally released for devices that do not receive the iOS 17 update but are still considered strong in terms of hardware:

  • iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

  • iPhone X

Devices Receiving iOS 15.8.8 Update:

This version includes much older, almost legendary Apple models:

  • iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

  • iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

  • iPhone SE (1st Generation)

  • iPad Air 2

  • iPad mini (4th Generation)

  • iPod touch (7th Generation)

Things to Consider Before Installation

Since storage space is usually limited on older devices, you need to make sure that you have enough free space on your device before updating. Although these types of security-oriented packages are generally not very large in size, it is a healthy method to leave 1-2 GB of free space so that the system can move easily during installation.

In addition, backing up via iCloud or a computer is always the safest way to avoid possible data loss during the update.

This support from Apple also serves as a stance against defense of “planned obsolescence” in the technology world. The fact that the iPhone 6s model, released in 2015, is still receiving security updates in 2026 helps the device maintain its second-hand value and lifespan.

Should I Update?

You may be afraid of experiencing any performance loss on your device, but security updates generally do not include processes that tire the system. On the contrary, clearing faulty codes running in the background contributes to a more stable operation of the device. It is recommended that you install these updates without delay for the security of your banking applications, social media accounts and personal photos.
