Apple is developing a special Pencil for the iPhone Ultra. This new accessory holds a valuable place in the company’s foldable device strategy.

According to claims, Apple is considering offering a new stylus with its first foldable iPhone model. This stylus stands out as one of the options in the development process.

However, this accessory is not expected to be released as part of the launch event expected next month. Apple is addressing its foldable model, known as the iPhone Ultra, not only in terms of screen size and hinge structure, but also with new usage scenarios.

Foldable Design and Pencil Compatibility

Shared design details show that this stylus will be different from the Apple Pencil series used in current iPad models. To accommodate the shorter body of the iPhone Ultra, the Apple Pencil is being considered for a physically shorter design.

This way, the length and usage style of the Apple Pencil developed for the iPad will not be directly transferred to the phone. However, the basic physical approach of the pencil is planned to resemble Apple’s existing products.

In this design, the pencil is envisioned to magnetically attach to the side of the device, and storage and charging processes will be carried out via this connection. While magnetic attachment of the Apple Pencil to the body has been a long-standing approach in iPad models, the ergonomic results of a direct application on a foldable phone may be different.

It is considered that the position of the pencil may affect the grip style as the screen ratio and usage orientation of the device change. For this reason, the accessory being considered for the iPhone Ultra may need to be different not only in terms of size but also in terms of user experience.

It seems that Apple is conducting special studies to avoid disrupting the overall ergonomics of the device when designing this accessory. Ensuring the pen’s physical dimensions are compatible with the phone’s compact design is considered one of the most critical aspects of the design.

Ergonomic Challenges and Screen Sensitivity

The report points out that placing the pen on the side of the iPhone Ultra could create some awkwardness during use. On the iPad, the Apple Pencil’s magnetic connection creates a more natural position, especially when used horizontally, at the top of the device.

However, a similar placement on the foldable iPhone could bring the pen closer to the user’s hand. This situation may require design considerations not only in terms of carrying and charging the pen, but also in terms of its accessibility while holding the device.

A more important issue concerns the physical sensitivity of the foldable screen. According to the arguments, carrying the pen next to the device or using it in certain ways could cause unwanted marks on the iPhone Ultra’s inner screen, which is said to be more sensitive.

The constant opening and closing of the screen on foldable phones creates different mechanical and surface requirements than classic smartphone panels. For this reason, it is claimed that even if the stylus in question was considered in the development stage, it is not expected to become a product announcement in the near future.
