Apple iPhone Upgrade Program Ends, New Era Begins

Apple iPhone Upgrade Program Ends, New Era Begins

Apple has ended the iPhone Upgrade Program and launched the new leasing system, Apple Upgrade. Here are all the details and program differences that former users need to know.

Apple has announced a significant change in the technology world, officially ending its long-standing iPhone Upgrade Program. This program, which operated in the US market, will be replaced by a new “Apple Upgrade” leasing system encompassing iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac devices. With this strategic move, the company aims to consolidate users’ device acquisition processes under a single umbrella.

As part of the change, customers currently enrolled in the old program will be directed to Apple Card installment payment options or direct purchase formulas when it’s time to upgrade their devices. Apple plans to guide users through this transition process, making it easier for them to adapt to the new system.

  • Apple has completely discontinued the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments in the US.
  • The newly implemented Apple Upgrade system offers devices on a rental basis instead of a purchase model.
  • Unlike the old program, AppleCare service is offered as an optional add-on in the new system.
  • In the new system, which is run in collaboration with Klarna, ownership rights remain with the company throughout the rental period.

Differences Between the Old and New Programs Identified

The old program, which was introduced with the iPhone 6s series in 2015, operated as a Citizens One-supported installment loan system. Users could upgrade their devices after 12 months or complete 24 installments to become fully owned. However, the new Apple Upgrade system is built on a basic rental model.

In the new model, the owner of the device is no longer the user, but the Klarna company throughout the leasing period.

Users are being directed to new options

Existing iPhone Upgrade Program members will have to pay for alternative options offered by Apple when their next upgrade period arrives. Options such as monthly installments with Apple Card, direct device purchase, or carrier financing are now available.

AppleCare, which was standard in the old system’s monthly payments, has been made a separate add-on in the new leasing system. This directly affects monthly payment prices and users’ insurance choices.

Apple is conducting a comprehensive support process to address any confusion users may experience during this transition.

Hardware Purchase Processes Are Being Reshaped

The tech giant aims to make the device cycle more controlled with this comprehensive leasing service, which is not limited to phones but also includes iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. At the end of the leasing period, users have three basic rights: to upgrade to a new device, to purchase the existing device for a fee, or to return the device and leave the program entirely.

This radical change by the company is accelerating the transition to a usage-oriented economic model instead of device ownership.
