Apple in Memory Crisis: Prices Won’t Fall

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that increasing the number of memory suppliers may not lower product prices and that price increases may be permanent.

Apple CEO Tim Cook made important statements regarding the memory supply and pricing challenges the company is facing. Cook stated that increasing the number of suppliers may not lead to the expected price reduction.

Apple has had to increase the prices of many of its products due to the recent memory shortage. To alleviate this situation, the company is seeking approval from the US government to work with Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC.

Uncertainty Regarding Pricing

At Apple’s 2026 third-quarter earnings call, the question of whether its supply chain diversification strategy would lower prices was raised. Tim Cook pointed to the significant increase in memory costs, stating that finding new suppliers could increase product availability but there is no guarantee that it will reverse the trend in prices.

Cook, reminding that there are currently three main suppliers in the DRAM market, stated that having more suppliers would be positive on the supply side. However, emphasizing that the pricing side is not clear, Cook adopted a cautious approach on this matter. Although Cook initially implied that there could be a positive effect on prices, he quickly corrected this statement to manage expectations.

It is stated that Apple plans to use the memory it will source from Chinese suppliers in devices sold in markets outside the US. This strategy aims to reduce general inventory shortages by allowing components from existing suppliers to be reserved for products in the US market. However, this move does not eliminate concerns that the recent price increases may be permanent.

Supply Chain and Future Expectations

Apple management maintains uncertainty about whether the increase in memory costs will be reflected in product prices. The company states that it is evaluating all options to increase supply chain flexibility on a global scale. This situation suggests that it may not be realistic for consumers to expect a price drop in the near future.

The company’s third-quarter 2026 results clearly show the pressure of memory costs on the financial statements. Apple is taking strategic steps to manage cost pressures while simultaneously trying to ensure supply continuity.

These developments indicate the beginning of a new era in the technology world regarding the reflection of hardware costs on the end-user.
