The Claude Code AI assistant caused a massive data loss by accidentally deleting over 48,000 documents from a software developer’s computer in seconds. The incident occurred while the developer was using the AI ​​to test the project.

This situation once again highlighted the significant risks that AI tools can pose during autonomous processes. The developer community attributes this data loss to the neglect of basic software practices.

Windows touchpoints caused the error

The developer instructed the Claude Code assistant to perform some repairs on the software that analyzes historical stock market data. The assistant was planned to preserve brand new documents and only work on copies.

During the repair processes, 11 different missions were executed, and 10 of them were completed without incident. However, in the final mission, the goal was to create a mirror copy to recreate the test environment.

The test environment contained 614 folders known as contact points in Windows. These folders are actually pointers that point to another location on the computer.

When the AI ​​tried to clean these contact points, it didn’t perceive them as mere pointers. Instead, it followed these points to the directory containing the actual working documents and deleted the data.

In total, more than 55,000 documents were deleted, over 48,000 of which belonged to the user’s live working environment. The entire process took less than 100 seconds.

The assistant reported its mistake to the developer with the message, “Craig, stop and read this. I broke something.” This demonstrated the significant risks that AI can pose during autonomous processes.

Git Database and Community Reaction

In addition to the deleted files, the Git repository on the computer was also significantly damaged. Although the file names could be listed, it was not possible to recover the content.

After the incident was shared on Reddit, the developer community opened a discussion on the matter. A large number of users criticized the failure to use tools like GitHub, a remote version control system.

The community described this as a neglect of basic developer practices. It was emphasized that the lack of a remote backup is a major deficiency in a professional work environment.

A similar situation occurred in February 2026 with Meta AI researcher Summer Yue. When Yue gave an AI spy access to Gmail, the spy began deleting hundreds of emails.
