It is reported that Apple aims to increase Apple Intelligence performance by increasing the RAM capacity to 9GB in iPhone 18 models.
The entry-level iPhone 18 models, which Apple is expected to launch in spring 2027, may come with higher RAM capacity to increase Apple Intelligence performance. According to the information shared by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new devices are expected to have 9GB of RAM.
This capacity increase means an increase of 1GB compared to the 8GB RAM used in the current iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e models. It is estimated that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models will be offered with 12GB of RAM, remaining at the same level as the current iPhone 17 Pro series.
RAM change on the hardware side
In his statement on the X platform, Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the iPhone models to be released in the spring will be equipped with A20 chips. It is stated that these chips will have a 1.5GB x 6 die structure and will replace the 2GB x 4 structure in the A19 models.
A20 Pro chips are expected to offer a total of 12GB of RAM with a 1.5GB x 8 die structure. It is thought that the main motivation for Apple to increase the RAM size in entry-level models is to ensure that the system runs more smoothly under intense artificial intelligence workloads.
AI performance and uncertainties
iOS 27, introduced at the WWDC event held in June 2026, is preparing to offer advanced artificial intelligence features such as Siri AI to users this fall. It is known that Apple wants its new devices to run at peak performance with these features.
However, it is not yet clear what kind of concrete difference the switch from 8GB RAM to 9GB RAM will make on on-device AI models. Current information shows that devices with 12GB of RAM can run special artificial intelligence models, while devices with 8GB of RAM do not have this support.
Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra models this fall. The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models are planned to appear in the spring of 2027.
Do you think this 1GB RAM increase will make a noticeable difference in daily use and artificial intelligence experience?
